The battle of the bike: Paris puts a spoke in the plans of other bike-friendly cities

Paris wants to be “the cycling capital of the world” by 2020. Here's the details:

  • The plan will cost $164 million
  • It goes to the city council for approval on April 13
  • The goal: to triple the share of all trips made by bike, from 5 to 15 percent.
  • To make this happen, in the next 5 years Paris will double its network of bike lanes to 870 miles (partly by making many lanes two-way)
  • Speed limits on many streets will be lowered to 18 mph
  • There will be 10,000 secure bike parking spaces
  • They will offer financial incentives for people to buy electric and conventional bikes
